Phil Stringer

Phil’s relationship with free jazz and improvised music has been episodic since seeing the cover of Ornette’s ‘Free Jazz’ in 1969 and then listening to the album the following year. Lately his listening has been given fresh impetus by the politics in the UK and elsewhere, where memories have shortened about the dangers of nationalism. He is a psychologist in the UK, living on the Surrey Hampshire border, and regularly writes and reviews for academic and practitioner journals. He last reviewed music for the University of Newcastle upon Tyne’s student newspaper before CDs and streaming had been invented. He has been inspired by reading reviews on the freejazzblog and one consequence is a motivation to contribute to the blog and its community, united in music.
