A descendent of Scottish hillbillies, moonshiners, and railroad men, Rick Joines was born in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains and grew up playing in garage bands and finding solace listening to free jazz in Nashville, Tennessee—Music City. Rick now lives in Denton, Texas, where he teaches literature and writing at the University of North Texas, home of the first university jazz degree program and the One O’clock Lab Band, and where he and his wife, Raina, get to listen to some of the greatest young jazz talent in the world. He likes people who like Plato . . . and free jazz.
