- What is your greatest joy in improvised music?
I’m not sure that “Improvised Music”categorically brings me joy. I would phrase it more like this: of all the methods of composing music, improvising is the most joyful (by far). - What quality do you most admire in the musicians you perform with?
Boldness and commitment to ideas. - Which historical musician/composer do you admire the most?
Does “historical” just mean “deceased”? I’ll go with the most innovative who died quite recently: Little Richard. - If you could resurrect a musician to perform with, who would it be?
Honestly, Beethoven would make a pretty incredible zombie (and we would finally figure out if he was Black or not). - What would you still like to achieve musically in your life?
I’ll get back to you when I’m on my deathbed! - Are you interested in popular music and - if yes - what music/artist do
you particularly like
Rosalía’s music is pretty fantastic! - If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I wouldn’t mind being able to sleep without getting up 1-3 times a night. - Which of your albums are you most proud of?
I am equally proud of all of them. I don’t hold back! - Once an album of yours is released, do you still listen to it? And how
often?
Yeah I do, I basically treat it like any other album of music that is not mine: it’ll start off in my regular rotation, and then after that, it’ll just be whenever I feel like it. I don’t shy away from it if I feel like listening to it in a given moment! It’s never really only “your” music anyway. - Which album (from any musician) have you listened to the most in your
life?
Probably the Cinema Paradiso soundtrack, as I had a solid 6 months of high school where I fell asleep to that every night. - What are you listening to at the moment?
Whether or not this is “music” I’ll leave up to you, but these days I’m actually mostly listening to battle rappers. Charlie Clips and Nu Jerzey Twork, in particular. - What artist outside music inspires you to
Arthur Jafa, Octavia Butler, Ted Chiang, Donald Glover, Eric Andre, Chris Rock, George Carlin, Paul Dano, Toni Morrison.
